The Last Family Farm

The Last Family Farm was an important image for me to create. I took the photo in December 2014 just after major shoulder surgery due to an auto accident. Even though I am right handed and my arm was in a sling I was able to create this haunting image that was time sensitive. Owned for generations by the Ferris family of Hastings, Michigan this was my fathers great aunt and uncle. The home and farm was finally abandoned after the Keith Ferris passed and the children had moved away. The property was offered to the Pennock Hospital in Hastings for the purpose of building a new hospital. After Spectrum Health took over the Pennock system it was deemed that building an entirely new facility was not practical. It was finally torn down in the summer of 2015. It's sad that so many family farms are being sold or abandoned so that "corporate farms" can take their places for the sake of increased production. What was an American way of life, the family farm is becoming a thing of the past.
