'Spirit of the North Woods'

My wife has been interested in genealogy for years working on my connection with the northern Michigan Ojibwa (Chippewa) Tribe. I decided that a series of paintings in that direction was something I needed to do. In Native American culture the Wolf had significant spiritual meaning, our Native Americans related to the Timber wolf (Gray Wolf) in many different ways. Both were hunters with strong family, social and tribal ties, both defended their kind against their enemies and they both hunted in packs. The wolf taught the Indians how to hunt and forage for food and the importance of family. Other tribes believed that wolves were spiritual beings that had magical powers, so it’s more then fitting that the Gray Wolf is the ‘The Spirit of the North Woods’.
