Public Debt to the Suffragette

Mary Coss's avatar Mary Coss

Public Debt to the Suffragette speaks to both history and current times. I honor the strong women who came before us, memorializing a social movement that is still relevant over a century later. Hard fought battles of gender and voting rights continue to be challenged, creating current news alongside a historical narrative. Seven generations of women in my family materialize alongside the suffragettes. My mother, my daughters, and myself would not be who we are today without these heroines. Within this ethereal backdrop, water dripping serves as a testament to time. Corsets and dresses are built upon umbrella forms, a structure of shelter. It’s written that women donned the first corsets to take a stand. These women were saying no to motherhood and in effect, yes to other possibilities. On the other hand, evidence shows that women broke or removed ribs to create a body to fit the current ideal. History is storytelling; truth is illusive.
