While the Japanese origami crane is recognized worldwide as a symbol of peace there are other symbolic aspects of the culture that are equally special but not as well known. For 2016 I am featuring The Frog (a symbol of good fortune), Bonsai (pronounced Bone-sigh) the art of growing miniature live trees in tiny containers, and a classic Japanese children's story about the Moon Rabbit. Each mobile will consist of a set of 1000 miniature cranes, frogs, or bunnies (along with folded paper wisteria and water lilies). Why so tiny? Because I believe it is all too easy to overlook small wonderful things in our day-to-day lives. Working in miniature is how I create an opportunity that leads viewers to slow down and see more from simple gestures of kindness, the beauty of nature, and the possibilities beyond what we may have imagined could be created from a humble square of paper. There is beauty all around us, we just need to notice it.
