Lake Superior Cold Dawn

This is a watercolor batik painting on rice paper. Using paraffin wax as a resist, I am able to save whites, and lighter colors. Each painted area is covered with melted wax, and this continues as the colors progress to darker shades. Once the darkest colors are added, and coated with wax, the entire painting is covered. The painting is then sandwiched between several sheets of newsprint, and a warm iron is applied to remove the wax from the painting. A second repeat of newsprint and warm iron is then used to remove the balance of wax left in the rice paper. Additional markings can be made at that point, with ink, or watercolor.
