Charting The Wolverine

This image, "Huron River" is one of 18 map-prints in the series "Charting the Wolverine". "Charting the Wolverine" is a series of prints created to map the Wolverine train from Ann Arbor to Battle Creek and on to Chicago. It is inspired by a 17th Century scroll map from Japan, as well as the artist's research into historical maps and atlases of Michigan, as well as her love of riding the train. The project also references the Japanese woodcut prints of Ando Hiroshige, "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road." This highly unusual artwork straddles an area between fine prints and cartography, expanding our notion of what it means to orient ourselves in the world. In and age of GPS and Google Maps, this work takes us back to a time before digital media, while celebrating both the most iconic places along this route in southern Michigan, and the smaller, overlooked but still significant corners of our everyday experience.
