High Altitude

In the Teton Mountain range there are many hiking trails available for almost any adventurous nature lover. My adventure for this year was to help chaperone 50 teens from West Catholic High School on the annual Out West Trip traveling from Michigan to Wyoming. The highlight of this trip was visiting Yellowstone and Teton National Parks. I have camped and hiked in the Teton area several times in my life. This time was different, as a scheduled hike took us from Lupine Meadows to subalpine lakes. It is hard to comprehend the difficulty of hiking up 10.2 miles of rocky switchbacks in the high altitude until you actually experience it. Halfway up, I questioned my sanity and fitness level. Why am I putting myself through this grueling hike? The panoramic views, abundant wildflowers, and my curiosity kept me going to the end goal of seeing Surprise Lake. Wow. The sight of the crystal clear lake surrounded by snow, rock, and blue sky was truly inspiring. I will never forget that experience. That is why I choose to do a painting of this view of Surprise Lake for my Artprize entry. I dedicate this painting to the students with me who also did not give up, who pushed themselves past their limits to reach their goal. We didn’t think we could make it but we did! The reward was more than just getting to the top. It was the feeling of an accomplishment. Oil on oil primed panel. 24x30 plus frame.
