For centuries, the Moors occupied & conquered various lands throughout Africa and Europe. They were responsible for introducing sanitation, astronomy, architecture, literature, medicine, physics, zoology, geography and mathematics to the lands they conquered, which caused Europe to emerge from the dark ages. The Moorish occupation of Spain lasted for nearly 800 years. Led by King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabela I, the Spanish began a campaign to drive out the Moors from Spain, by conquering regions, one by one. The Granada War, which lasted for 10 years, ended all Moorish rule along the Iberian Peninsula and simultaneously caused the expansion of Christian Kingdoms. Still today, the City Council of Granada celebrates the fall of the Alhambra annually and the Granada War is considered as the final war of the Reconquista (reconquest).
