Keeper of the Forest

The “Keeper of the Forest” is a rendition of my father depicted as larger than life- a giant in the forest. He is portrayed as a steward of the land, a ranger or someone who cares for and watches over the forest, a leader-holding a sapling ready to plant, and a nurturer of all living things. Because the setting of this piece takes place in the woods, and the subject matter revolves around nature, I’ve chosen to use natural Kraft paper and charcoal for the drawing, symbolizing materials from the earth, as my father is a very resourceful person. The large rustic frame is made from wood milled on the property over which he watches. And finally, the simplicity of this piece represents his demeanor: he is humble and good-natured—nothing fancy or false.
