AMISTAD (FriendShip)

The realistic silicone sculptures created, were based on a true story of the 1839 mutiny aboard the slave ship La Amistad. During which, the African Mende tribesmen were abducted for the slave trade. Some were dying, women were giving birth and some were even thrown from the ship. Eventually the tribesmen managed to gain control of their captors' ship off the coast of Cuba, and the international legal battle was followed by their capture by a U.S. revenue cutter. Fortunately, the case was resolved by the United States Supreme Court in 1841 and the slaves were eventually freed.
