This will be a larger than life, temporary sand painting of a Sturgeon installed in the Gerald R. Ford Museum. The sand painting will be on a platform 4ft x 16ft x 32 inches tall. “Sand Sturgeon” evolved from my large scale photographs and drawings of fish I catch and release. An iconic fish in Michigan and throughout the world, the sturgeon is critically endangered. The sand represents the fragility of the species and its ecosystem. “Sand Sturgeon” is a temporary installation. Once ArtPrize 8 is over, it will be gone forever. Special thanks to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, who allowed me to accompany them on their sturgeon survey on Lake St. Clair, and photograph the sturgeon upon which this painting is based.
