A Day in December

A Day In December. The world tends to move in cycles. There's birth, youth, productive years, old age, and death. When compared to the cycle of a year everything ends in December. I'm going to loosely call my painting a ghost town, a town at the end of it's productive life. When I think of a town I think not only of the buildings, but also of the people who made the buildings, those who worked and lived there. The mining community was based on hard and dangerous work, explosions, cave-ins, long days, and bad working conditions. The buildings and the people had the same fate...to become too old. Getting old hurts, it's hard to stand up straight, our surface cracks, droop, we are dismissed as no longer valuable. We are nearing the end of our cycle. I consider my painting a monument to the hard side of life. I'm saluting the common laborer who gets broken and left behind. It's scary when we reach the December of our lives.
