Wall of Courage

Heather Haynes's avatar Heather Haynes

Wall of Courage is a powerful, monolithic art piece depicting 80 orphaned children from the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is designed to promote thoughtful action, to make the audience ponder their place on this earth and decide what they can do to promote positive change. It creates palpable feelings within the viewer, creating a tension that makes the them feel compelled to act. On each individual portrait is a handwritten, heartbreaking story of what these children have had to endure in their young lives. It has taken Heather 3 years to complete the Wall of Courage paintings. Over the last 3 years, through the support gained from showing this work in various stages of completion, Heather has secured sponsorships for all of these children, raised enough money to build them a home, has developed an agricultural project and has received financial backing to build a school. She has also been video documenting her travels to DRC in order to create a full length documentary.
