The Pinnacle

In 2013 I opened jhaan Studios in East Lansing, MI. where I work in what I call Kiln-Formed Art Glass. This differs from typical fused glass in that very little of the manufactured glass is used in its original state. To create the effects I am looking for I crush it, manipulate it with a torch, cut, layer and fused it, or heat it in a small kiln till it’s molten, then pulling it into strands in a process called vitrograph. The end result is a piece like no other. Unlike some glass imagery, my technique has a three dimensional quality to it. By layering glass I give individual objects such as trees, water or flowers texture. Next, in the mounting of the pieces, they are layered again giving the entire piece depth. I work from original drawings and photographs and this rendering of the pines overlooking Lake Michigan, takes me home to the lake I love.
