Metaboles

Hugo Lopez-Chirico's avatar Hugo Lopez-Chirico

What is metabole? It is a rhetoric figure strongly related to musical variation. In facts, there are many variations that are good examples of metaboles, i.e. the Variation XVIII from Rachmaninov´s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini: the radical but evolving transformation, step-by-step, variation-by-variation, of an idea (theme) until reaching another completely opposed idea in character and expressiveness. Digital media offers a wonderful tool for developing this concept, which is strongly anchored in time in the field of visual arts and allows the application of musical variation procedures to visual ones, as shown in my entry. My metaboles began as chromatic transfigurations of 2D images of my sculptures. Not "Death and Transfiguration", only transfiguration because the sculptures are still alive.
