Black Waltz

The inspiration for my waltz series came to me when I woke up suddenly at 3am one morning. I had a vision in my head of a spinning dress carved out of wood. I had never attempted wood carving before then, but I loved the challenge. It took a year and a half of working part time to realize that first dream. Black Waltz is now the third one of this series. Each one has pushed the vision further along with deeper waves and under cuts, growing more and more fabric like. This piece was created in three major sections. The base is four layers of two inch thick stock laying down laminated together. The top is made in the same way with two layers. The center is four layers laminated together but standing up instead of lying down. The center was then mortise and tenoned into the base and top. Once I had that form built up I stated the initial shaping with a mini chainsaw and then proceeded to the detail carving with die grinders. It was then sanded and finished with a clear polyurethane.
