Presence in Stillness

This body of work is based on the aesthetics of the churches and cathedrals of Grand Rapids: To have without holding, To take in without use, To let go without regret. Juxtaposed next to these rather immense, ornate and aged environments I sensed a stillness that leaned toward suffering and anticipation. The beauty I encountered whispered of age and effort, of lives lived and times past, of flames forming colored glass and wicked candles, stone being chiseled and wood carved, alongside lives where breath was taken in and sometimes held. Held in anticipation of the unknown, of mystery. A beauty that could not be grasped or used or contained, but would, in its time, fade away and be gone, as a sunset when darkness settles in. I could never grasp it and hold it close, I can only see it in its moment, breathe it in and then let it go. M. Joy Lemon 2015
