A Breakthrough

Kate Askegaard's avatar Kate Askegaard

A Breakthrough happens when a choice is made: to pursue, to persevere, to go deeper, to leave your comfort zone, to take a step into the unknown. This piece is based off of my own photography. Her face, arms, and body are created with the dots and dashes that I am known for. This technique is called stippling, which creates the image by using varying amounts of tiny dots. By using more or less dots, or by placing them closer together or farther apart, I make the illusion of the image. This year my piece no longer just looks 3D but becomes 3D. The hands, foot and embellishments on the frame were sculpted out of clay then cast into resin. The frame is made from oak.The skirts are fabric, treated with a hardener. The background is brushed ink as well as dashes of ink with pen to give it a unique feel.
