ABERASH ( Giving off Light)

Ann Rather's avatar Ann Rather

The piece I am entering this year is entitled ABERASH. ABERASH simply means giving off light in the Amharic language. This is a study of an African woman in her ceremonial garb and although life in Africa can be hard for anyone, especially females, there is still a sense of joy in her eyes and a pride in who she is and what she represents. Her spirit seems to illuminate this "light". I have chosen a handmade frame to house this piece in. It is made of exotic Purple Heart wood and is native to the African region. I feel it continues the theme of a strong person and her fortitude. This is my second year participating in Artprize. Reference material was obtained through Wet Canvas. It is a free use reference library.
