Y i k e s ! Stripes

A good friend suggested I create several wildlife paintings of striped animals for Artprize. Hmmmm, I liked the idea so started to investigate and found a number of mysteries concerning striped animals. The larger the animal (mammals) the less prevalent they are and conversely the smaller (birds, fish and especially insects) the more common. There also doesn't seem to be a concrete reason as to the purpose of the stripes. There seems to be more suggested reasons for stripes than there are striped animals. As example; Zebra stripes: They may be an attraction for reproductive purposes (they all look the same to me), camouflage (really, black and white in nature?), to confuse the tsetse fly (is a fly really able to see a whole Zebra at once?) family Identification (They all look the same!), may help cool the animal (Really??). One thing I found for sure, striped animals are truly beautiful creatures and it would be an immeasurable loss if they were to disappear from the Earth.
