Fractal Gait

Joshua Enck's avatar Joshua Enck

For Art Prize 2015, I propose a unique, abstract wooden sculpture that references organic and architectural imagery: spider webs, crystals, and steel bridges. This watercolor sketch suggests the essence of the form that I will build. Using a process that I developed for two previous sculptures, I will use thin sections of poplar wood to create triangular modules of different dimensions. I will fit them together in a controlled improvisation that emulates crystalline growth: painstakingly matching each triangle with three adjacent triangles to develop a complex volumetric whole. I will complement this intuitive form-making process with great attention to detail, including the surface finishing. I will use layers of paint to recall weathering processes and patinas of use. The title of the piece reflects the complex geometry of the sculpture and its animated gesture. The finished sculpture will create a moray pattern of shadows that will engage with the space in which it is shown.
