Myth Makers from the Circle of Life

I'm inspired that children learn so much from the natural world, from creatures who inhabit that world, and from stories that swirl around everything that arouses curiosity. As I created these pieces, I thought about such influences in my own life. I have always been enchanted with totems and hope that the totems in this installation inspire viewers enough to think up their own stories to go with them. I invite the public to do this during Art Prize, either in writing or with video. These creatures are made from 100% cotton rag pulp - not to be confused with papier mache. I have a portable Hollander beater in which I grind up recycled clothing and linens to make the paper pulp I use for sculpture. Many of the colors found in the sculptures occur naturally in the pulp. I am willing to bring my Hollander to Grand Rapids during Art Prize to teach week end workshops in mask and totem making with families. My set-up is portable and can be adapted to sidewalk, park, or parking lot.
