Abandoned II

Kathleen Hodges's avatar Kathleen Hodges

"Abandoned II" is surreal interpretation depicting the abandoned farm. As agribusiness continues to takeover food production with energy intensive methods, vast acres of farmland with abandoned homes, barns, silos and farm equipment dot the rural landscape. I have used my original photographic images, mixed media techniques and collage to portray this feeling of abandonment. Quotes by Wendell Berry, a Kentucky farmer and longtime farming activist are incorporated into the piece. Many questions can be asked about the future of the farmer, the production of food and what to do with these abandoned landscapes. But I ask, what values and beliefs led us to this current situation? When we abandon or are abandoned, the outward appearance is apparent.
