Uncultivated is a multi-part, indoor and outdoor installation focused on wild plants that uses the landscape surrounding a decommissioned Catholic church on Rumsey Street to geo-reference photographs of plants commonly known as 'weeds'. The photographs are displayed within a site-specific installation inside the church and one is featured on a public billboard along Grandview Ave SW, just south of Wealthy Street. The project questions the line we draw between cultivated and uncultivated plants, encouraging a more nuanced view of the natural environment we have collectively created in the wake of the way we live in cities. The images are also posted on the project website ( along with detailed information on all the plants appearing in them. The project will include a plant walk in collaboration with Grand Rapids-based forager and author Lisa M. Rose on Sept 28. Grand Rapids represents the 7th city in which the Uncultivated has been realized.
