Solace is a series of three paintings inspired by the discovery of a monastery that is to be built on the isle of Mull, Scotland. It will be the first monastery in the Celtic Isles, in over a thousand years. Looking at photos of the surrounding landscape (mullmonastery.com) I fell in love with the savage beauty. The abundance of hardy creatures living among the cliffs, volcanic rocks, and churning sea, inspires me. The Celtic people describe the area as a "thin place", where heaven and earth are drawn together. A violent place at times, yet I find solace that there are people who have lived there in the past and are willing again. Devoting their lives to prayer, for us and for the world.
