Greatest Generation/Beta Team/November

Fred Cogelow's avatar Fred Cogelow

Portrait of a fine Belgian equine and two friends. Based on combined/altered photo compositions with concocted background and hame. Carved in butternut. A "high-mezzo" relief, carved from a 4" base slab with laminations to right arm and part of the gate employed as a framing element at bottom. This proved the most laborious enterprise of my career, far more demanding than pieces many times it's size, mostly for technical reasons that went well beyond accessibility issues (behind the beams and spreader rings) and preservation of plausibility in the sweater and construction lines. Most of the challenges resided with compositional choices and the necessity of orchestrating the entirety of the actual available depth utilization prior to any undercutting. 99% a product of edge tools, the schooled elites will Shirley embrace it as "cutting edge" material, —but what will the masses make of it? Note: the rims of the spectacles have been darkened since the foe-toes were taken.
