COMING HOME is a multimedia storytelling exhibit that shares small yet evocative snapshots of the experiences of New Yorkers either during or after their incarceration. The installation includes large-scale portraits of fourteen participants, which are paired with short two to four minute edited audio pieces. The show’s content includes a range of topics, from parenting and losing a parent to re-learning how to live on the outside. Together, these pieces provide an incomplete yet rich view of the New York prison system and how it changes those who interact with it. The exhibit was conceived by Megan Ghiroli and Emma Kaywin who found that they could bring their arts backgrounds into their work with formerly incarcerated patients. Both were inspired by the stories they heard routinely from patients and realized that they were in a position to facilitate a broader audience as well as provide an amplified voice for stories that are not often told.
