The Heart

In the installation project, ‘The Heart’, the viewer is invited into varying levels of involvement with the piece, moving from the transparent perimeter through the layered density of brushstroke into a completely opaque circular space within. Congruently, the viewer is confronted with the relational and spiritual expanses of a soul: the inner essence of an individual. Movement towards the center is movement from curiosity and first impression, to integration, exclusivity, and intimacy. In this space the corporeal substance of cells joins the immaterial substance of the soul. Here we can encounter the divine. My goal with this project, using encompassing experience, is to explore the dualities of the corporeal and the spiritual, autonomy and dependence, privacy and disclosure, boundaries and openings, to the eventual sanctuary and sacredness of true intimacy. The catalyst of this installation was a conversation shared between me and God: “You have great ideas and I’d love if you would give me one [an idea]”. He answered, “when I’m with you...what does it look and feel like when you’re in My presence?
