The Explorer

“The Explorer” is the most recent chapter of my ongoing visual novel, The Capture and Escape of Mr. M or Tales from Rainbow Forest. The work tells the story of the eponymous hero’s adventures as he makes his way through a new part of Rainbow Forest. The story is divided into three sections: Farewell, The Encounter, and The Cave. Each section is comprised of 3 drawings (22"x30", watercolor, colored pencil, acrylic on paper) and punctuated with a painting (40"x30", oil on linen over birch panel). Farewell- the explorer says goodbye to his friends and is off. He is followed by by birds and butterflies which he discovers are machines. The Encounter- the Explorer is surprised by a group of small men wearing animal masks. They welcome him with flower garlands. The garlands, however, soon become bindings and he becomes their captive. The Cave- one of the small men leads the explorer to a cave. As they make their way into the cave, they encounter a rock monster. When they leave the cave they encounter a machine - an Abstracticator, the purpose of which is unstated. The presentation at the Grand Rapids Art Museum is an excerpt of the full work but presents the arc of the the narrative.
