Damascus Days

Matt Thurston's avatar Matt Thurston

Mosaic Damascus steel miniature tools and weapons shaped, polished and tempered by Matthew Thurston. They are in a Damascus steel framed shadow box. I found Robert Eggerling's Mosaic Damascus steel at the 2013 Georgia Blade Show. I brought it back to Sabersmith, where I work. The machines used are a Lucifer oven that heats to 2000 degrees, band saws, Grizzly belt grinder, cloth polishing wheel and rotary tool. I like working with this medium because the end product surprises me with colors and patterns. Inspiration comes from Frank Frazetta, fantasy artist, Ray Harryhausen, stop motion special effects artist, Diamond Dimebag Darrell Abbott, musician, family and friends. Yes, there is a spider made of the same Damascus.
