Beautiful Rogues

Shayne Davidson's avatar Shayne Davidson

Overview: “Beautiful Rogues” is a series of artworks inspired by actual mugshots from Leavenworth Penitentiary between 1899 and 1909. Each image is accompanied by a story I wrote about the rogue’s life and crime(s) based on my research. I looked through more than 6000 mugshots at the National Archives to select the people whose mugshots inspired the artwork. The portraits and stories are my attempt to embody the fading glory, violence and humanity of life in the American old west. Americans are fascinated by this period in our history because it feels so close in time yet that way of life has now entirely vanished.
