My current body of work turns to literature as a source of visualization. Literature is riddled with dead or otherwise missing mothers. As one of the longest published novels, I began working with Marcel Proust’s titanic novel À la recherche du temps perdu or In Search of Lost Time. Taking nearly 7 years to recently finish, I retyped Proust’s In Search of Lost Time at 4,211 pages. Once the typing was complete, I began the process of cutting the work into individual words. While not yet complete, I continue to respond to the writing and to what I understand about Proust. Among many things, Proust’s novel is created as stream of consciousness, embodies instances of involuntary memory and creates dialogue surrounding the nature of art. In the meantime, I have created this second experiment. This ‘Proust Toast’ was created with Proust’s cork lined bedroom in mind.
