ori-Genes

Angelica Hay's avatar Angelica Hay

While many aesthetic features of our faces are determined by genetics, our eyes suggest that experience is an equally compelling factor. My work is motivated by the continuous, complex, and identity-shaping interplay between our genetics and our experiences. Inspired by my education in microbiology and molecular genetics, my work features diagrams of DNA replication, genetic repair, and genetic sequences juxtaposed with figures of friends and family. I attempt to weave together impactful narratives of origins, experiences, and science. My entry is a mixed media triptych--created using thin layers of acrylic, pen and ink, ballpoint pen, and oil paint. From left to right, the paintings portray my father, my brother, myself, and my mother. This piece is inspired by my background(s) as a hispanic and microbiologist. In genetics, Ori is the DNA sequence that signals the origin of replication—a process necessary for the development and growth of genes. In Spanish, origenes means origins.
