Metamorphosis

For the last couple years I have aspired to bring photography back to the hands on experience it had been when I was a teenager. By pairing up this desire with my love of textile, I experimented with using light sensitive emulsion on hand dyed linen. For this image I chose some butterflies I photographed at the Field Museum in Chicago. My choice of subject matter was influenced by the printing process. This print could only be made by using natural resources such as the sun to expose a giant negative to the linen and water to permanently 'fix' the image into the fabric. Many tests and exposures later, the results of this experiment ended with what you see here–a monochromatic image featuring the delicate details of these Morpho butterflies.
