Afternoon Incident

This piece consists of 3 large panels depicting a lonely beach overshadowed by a vast cloudy sky. An abandoned picnic and 3 bathing tents are being investigated by a pride of lions. Three figures are quickly leaving the scene, breaking the borders of the frames. Look closely to see what is being taken away with them. Whatever the idea, my work has always been about the conflict between sculptural objects that exist in real space and images that, divided from the rest of the world by a frame, create their own reality. In my work, people and objects inhabit boundless spaces, hinting at a narrative. There is a painted illusion of depth belied by flat, cutout shapes. All of my figures are aware that there is life outside their canvas. They look beyond their empty landscapes, over the shoulder of the viewer and begin to move into the world.
