Tools of the Trade

Gretchen Deems's avatar Gretchen Deems

The simple tools of the laborer/craftsman/master merge with the tools of the artist to document a personal story of the toil and commitment necessary to build a life brick by brick, moment by moment. Brick-laying is truly an art form in Mexico where I live half of each year. Each trowel is completely unique in character, and may have been employed to build the most grand or the most unassuming of forms. The drawings on these trowels are a therapeutic tool used by the artist to document and discover both interior and exterior worlds and events responsible for determining the direction and ultimate structure of her own life. This is an ongoing project that will continue to grow and build throughout the artist's career. It is a humble piece dedicated to the hard-working and joyful people of Mexico who have graciously shared their rich culture and their beautiful country with me.
