Connections is a photographic triptych of a female Barred Owl nurturing her six-week-old hatchling at their nest site. As we watched, the female Barred Owl flew in and landed on the edge of the nest cavity in which her juvenile was perched. She leaned toward the juvenile and they gazed at each other for 30 seconds. Continuing their intense gaze, she proceeded to raise her wings and then envelope her juvenile and start grooming it, eventually joining it in the nest cavity. When she finished, they perched in the nest cavity and looked out toward us for more than a minute. The female then emerged from the cavity and flew out of sight. Because Barred Owls are cavity nesters, it is often difficult to find their nest. We had the gift to see the nurturing behavior described herein because the nest was plainly visible, and the juvenile had not yet departed the nest. Successful nesting is critically dependent on the continued availability of suitable nesting sites and habitat.
