This piece is a model for a larger sculpture. Although it could be exhibited in it's current size, I want to create a larger version (customizable based on venue specifications) that would facilitate viewer interaction. As a result of the bright colors, the designs produced by the rake are not visible. It is both an exercise in futility and a joyful surrender to the chaos of each passing moment. Commonplace items are often signifiers of function and the same reverence set aside for celebration and mourning is not reserved for cooking dinner or paying bills. I want to pay homage to the mundane, because in the midst of a ceaseless emotional journey, the mundane is constant and provides not only a respite, but also a thermometer to gage emotional experience. My work focuses on the nature of paradox, seeking to monumentalize the banal and subvert functionality. This strategy is used in an attempt to freeze the fleeting and paradoxical shift from anticipation to experience.
