Phoenix is a 100-foot long installation that leads viewers through woven, towering stacks of burnt wood and metallic silver branches that spill across walls and wrap around corners. At the far end of the gallery, silver transforms into gold as the branches lift overhead and viewers are invited to walk underneath the installation. Each piece of wood in the front of the gallery was methodically charred by hand, creating a velvety rich, black surface. The title Phoenix refers to the mythological bird that rises to life out of ashes. This story, told for millennia in a variety of cultures, is a symbol of hope and rebirth out of difficult or challenging circumstances. Whether facing a personal struggle, hard circumstances, fear of the future, or uncertain times in our communities, governments, and around the globe, Phoenix is a reminder that growth happens in unexpected ways; that purification comes through fire, and beauty can be created out of ashes.
