"Flying High..." The Spiritual Journey of John Coltrane...

Robin Jensen's avatar Robin Jensen

John Coltrane, 1926-1967, a world renowned jazz musician had a complex and conflicted life journey. His saxophone wailed and thundered, full of fire. However, he struggled with a drug and alcohol habit which often affected his music. In 1957, he had a “Spiritual Awakening” when he rededicated himself to the God he trusted as a child. The mighty fire was rekindled and John Coltrane flew high, praising God with his jazz music. His composition, "A Love Supreme" stands out as a key recording expressing his devotion to God, making him a saint to many jazz lovers. There is a John Coltrane Christian Church in San Francisco. "Thank God almighty in Jesus' name... Thank God almighty for John Coltrane." (From a hymn of the Church of Saint John Coltrane, an African Orthodox Church in San Francisco.) The artwork depicts John Coltrane flying high with wings expressing his music and his creative freedom along with the fire in his heart.
