Last Supper in the D.P.R.K.

The successive dynastic rule of Kim Il-Sung, Kim Jong-Il and Kim Jong-Un, has submerged North Korea into a hermetic existence. This isolation from the outside world in the twenty-first century I find deeply fascinating. An entire generation of people have been indoctrinated from birth to worship the country’s leader as a God-like figure. This drawing is a reimagining of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous mural and an exploration of ideological systems. Through pencil-on-paper realism I seek to utilize artistic expression as a means of providing a cautionary visual narrative on the risks of authoritative influence. In particular, I am purposefully forming a compositional balance between subject matter and negative space to emphasize a feeling of propaganda. Large-scale figures establish a façade of grandeur, replacing Jesus and the Apostles with Kim Il-Sung and North Korean Leadership to construct powerful, influential imagery.
