Gravity

DESCRIPTION: This sculpture speaks to the evolutionary struggle of man, both spiritually and physically, to take flight. There has always been in us the desire to fly. Whether in our dreams or the realization of the Wright brother’s dream, we wish to be set free from the earth. This sense of flight as the final evolution of man is found all throughout history from folklore to the Bible. In my interpretation, He rises from the earth and stone up through his wings to the sky. Flight also represents a sense of being above it all: above the earth; above your problems; above the limitations put on us by others. The chains represent the physical, emotional and spiritual bonds that hold us down, both internal and external. Finally, the cloth represents a juxtaposition of the strength of a figure who appears to be in control of his physical universe versus the limitations of his inability to see the future.
