American Heart and Soul

"American Heart and Soul" is a photo montage of barns and fields along dirt road in Newaygo, Michigan and the American flag. The digital image will be printed as a giclee on canvas to 24" x 36". The stars and stripes edge the image and also show faintly through the image of the rich colors of the barns and the fields. The image of the barns and the road was digitally enhanced using high dynamic range techniques. I want to show the beauty of the barns that have withstood the test of time and are still used to store the farm equipment that is used to tend the fields. The rich muck soils have produced food for numerous decades feeding thousands of people. Farming is one of the most noble professions that has been around for centuries and is part of the heart of America. In recent years, we have a strong sense of the importance of locally grown produce. Agriculture is one of the top economic drivers in Michigan and the United States, and food that is grown locally and prepared by local chefs is something that we should celebrate and be proud of. That is why I have created this image to celebrate what I consider to be a critical element in the American spirit and honor farmers and the beauty of the American farm. I am a local artist who grew up in Grand Rapids. My work has won awards in the annual Festival of the Arts competition, Sparta Town and Country Days competitions, and the Muskegon Museum of Art Regional Show. My work has been displayed in several venues around town including the East Grand Rapids Library, Walker Library, Grand Rapids Realtor Association, Wyoming Library and One Trick Pony. My artwork has also been hung in various venues during Artprize. I am so excited to be able to participate in such a fantastic event that is unique and started in my hometown.
