Agim Rudi's avatar Agim Rudi

This 3D relief piece by Agim Rudi, a sculptor and professor of art, who resides in Kosovo (part of the former Yugoslavia) embodies the meaning and experience of "community" and the relationship between humans and the space in which they live. An Albanian survivor of genocide in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Rudi's works are inspired by stories of war, mass killings, forced exodus and perseverance through community, love and forgiveness. Rudi has been deeply affected as a refugee and survivor of genocide by the spaces in which he has lived, been oppressed, and later found freedom and learned to thrive. This July, Rudi travelled to America from Southeast Europe and immersed himself for the first time into Grand Rapids culture. He has been inspired by the incredibly supportive community in here and advocates that strong community is the key to overcoming oppression, ensuring survival, growth, movement forward and a better future. Please enjoy Rudi's 2014 AP entry: "Community".
