Armonico CLXVII

Antonella Zazzera's avatar Antonella Zazzera

Although intially trained as a painter, Antonella Zazzera has gained widespread critical acclaim for her work in sculpture. One significant aspect of her repertoire that has garnered particular attention are the large-scale abstract forms created from copper wire which have been meticulously woven together. In spite of both the delicacy and flexibility of the individual wire threads, Zazzera has been able to create truly monumental works that suggest durabilty and strength. The artist's choice of materials is significant, but so is her consideration of form and space, meaning the final shape of a sculpture and the environment in which it exists matter greatly. Zazzera begins her projects with research which ranges from painting to photogrpahy through to the sculpture and installation. She states, “the current work of sculpture is the result of a process which springs from photographic research leading to a focus on the importance of light in the definition of both space and form." This considered, Armonico CLXVII, may suggest the space between things, like an opening in a doorway, or a shadow being cast.
