Leaf Rings

This photo is a model for an installation I will build for ArtPrize. It will be made of 10,000 individual pieces of porcelain clay, each impressed with a leaf from an Ash tree. I began making this body of work to commemorate the decimation of the Ash tree by the emerald ash borer. As I made the work, it took on additional meanings for me – personal loss, grief work, resurrection, and the loss of species and habitats in our natural environment. This installation references cairns, burial mounds, and fairy rings - which can be interpreted to communicate loss, warning, memorial and landmark. The ArtPrize installation will be made to suit a specific location to the rear of the Public Art Museum of Grand Rapids. The size and scale will be determined by the site.
