Tribute to the Furniture City

These pieces were repaired & refinished by Bruce Lach of Timeless Arts Furniture Refinishing, then designed & decorated by Sandra Kuszpit. The highboys, built by Kindel Furniture Co. in the 1980’s, include intricately designed, detailed decorations utilizing a variety of techniques & mediums. Sketches hand stippled creating a pattern used with a dry pigment pounce to transfer the designs to the pieces. Raised details were laid-in with a Gesso of Durham water putty & lacquer. Bronzing powders were mixed with lacquer to paint the designs, stripe & gild, adding texture, depth, & perspective. Shading was painstakingly added using oil paints mixed with linseed oil & fine line detailing was done with India ink. The red secretary desk (approximately 100 yrs old) & the art deco floral desk were painted with oil paints and linseed oil. The result is a beautiful marriage of techniques & finishes creating custom pieces reminiscent of an era when Grand Rapids was "Furniture Capitol of the World."
