Big Waves Live - Pencil Drawings of Ocean Surf

Lee Mothes's avatar Lee Mothes

These graphite drawings are my attempt to convey the drama of ocean waves. To me, waves are elemental and beautiful...they rise and crash with a grace and rhythm that has enchanted me since childhood. This may sound strange, but waves seem to touch my soul. My process begins with photographs I've taken on beaches in Oregon and California. I make sketches from my photos that focus on the waves' energy and movement, and then I compose each drawing with light lines, and, over many days, draw their intricate textures and patterns in detail.
