A Study In Captivity: The Men and the Chair & The Suicide Bride

Elyse Gambino's avatar Elyse Gambino

This diptych is a study in captivity, which I define as being held physically or mentally against your will without the ability to free yourself, either in reality or imagined. I explore this concept by casting a wide net of research covering humanitarian issues to areas as specific as the personal questions of how, why, and by whom I am being metaphorically held captive. This has lead me to subject matter that makes me uncomfortable and self-conscious. Despite my empathy, repulsion, and confusion , I am painting truthfully
