Paradise is Our Heavenly State of War Without End

Carlo Ontal's avatar Carlo Ontal

A multi-panel large scale panoramic portrait depicting an imaginary state of resignation, and even happiness, with the persistent insecurity that dominates most aspects of life in conflict areas like the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Photographed from a single camera point-of-view, and made up of individually-lit portraits (or performances) by the inhabitants of a Congolese village, an area under the control of militia for most of its existence. The work invites your contemplation and re-imagination, not of the obvious suffering, but of the fullness of human life as lived in the worlds of pain outside of ours. The artist has been serving as a United Nations civilian peacekeeper in African war zones for the last fourteen years. This photograph is part of several bodies of work, produced privately, that employ myth, fashion and staged photojournalism to comment on how we ask media to insulate - rather than illuminate - on the suffering of others in an increasingly smaller world.
